Top Tier Fuel

A new class of Fuel, called TOP TIER Detergent Fuel, is appearing at retailstations of some fuel marketers. This Fuel meets detergency standards developed byfour automotive companies. A description of the concept and benefits of TOP TIER isprovided in the following question and answer section. What is TOP TIER Detergent Fuel? TOP TIER Detergent Fuel is a new classof Fuel with enhanced detergency. It meets new, voluntary deposit control standardsdeveloped by four automotive companies that exceed the detergent requirements imposedby the EPA.Who developed TOP TIER Detergent Fuel standards?TOP TIER Detergent Fuel standards were developed by four automotive companies:BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota. Why was TOP TIER Detergent Fuel developed?TOP TIER Detergent Fuel was developed to increase the level of detergent additivein Fuel. The EPA requires that all Fuel sold in the U.S. contain a detergentadditive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases, is not sufficient tokeep engines clean. In order to meet TOP TIER Detergent Fuel standards, a higherlevel of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Also, TOP TIER wasdeveloped to give fuel marketers the opportunity to differentiate their product. Why did the four automotive companies join together to develop TOP TIER?All four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized that low detergency is an issue of concern to severalautomotive companies. What are the benefits of TOP TIER Detergent Fuel?TOP TIER Detergent Fuel will help keep engines cleaner than Fuel containingthe “Lowest Additive Concentration” set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimalfuel economy and performance and reduced emissions. Also, use of TOP TIER DetergentFuel will help reduce deposit related concerns. Who should use TOP TIER Detergent Fuel? All vehicles will benefit from using TOP TIER Detergent Fuel over Fuelcontaining the “Lowest Additive Concentration” set by the EPA. Those vehicles that haveexperienced deposit related concerns may especially benefit from use of TOP TIERDetergent Fuel.Fuel Brands That Currently Meet TOP TIER Detergent Fuel StandardsAs of August 15, 2005, the following Fuel brands meet the TOP TIER DetergentFuel Standards:- Chevron Chevron has markets in 29 states in the West, Southwest and South, as well as in Alaska andHawaii. Battery Drain Parasitic

Parasitic battery drain is the cumulative load produced by electrical devices (e.g., ECMs, clocks, security alarms, and radio presets), when the ignition is turned off. These items continue to operate, when the ignition has been switched off, and are becoming an ever increasing problem. Normal parasitic loads are below 75 milliamps (.075 amps). When parasitic load is greater than 75 milliamps, batteries will drain even faster. Glove box, trunk, and under hood lights that do not automatically turn off when the door is closed, or shorted alternator diodes, are common offenders. Cooling fans, power seat belt retractors, radios and dome lights left on, alarm systems, and electric car antennas can also cause batteries to drain overnight. Leaving headlights on will usually discharge a fully charged car battery, with 90 minutes of reserve capacity (36 amp hours), in a couple of hours. Two methods are used to test for parasitic load (engine off, under hood light disconnected, accessories off, and vehicle doors closed):1. The basic approach is to connect a 12-volt bulb across the positive and negative battery terminals to test the bulb and battery. If it glows brightly, remove the negative battery cable and connect the bulb in series between the negative battery cable connector and the negative battery terminal. If the bulb continues to glow brightly, start removing fuses or connections to the positive battery, one-at-a-time, until the offending electrical component is identified by the bulb dimming.2. The best approach is to use a DC ammeter, connected in series between the negative battery cable connector and the negative battery terminal, or a clamp meter (set to DC amps), clamped around the negative battery cable. Starting with the highest scale (or set multimeter to auto range), determine current load. If load is above 75 milliamps, after the initial surge, start removing fuses or connections to the positive battery post, one-at-a-time, until the offending electrical component is identified by the parasitic load dropping to 75 milliamps. Engine Cleaning

Despite the proliferation of signs in various repair shops urging customers to have their engines cleaned, the practice can actually leave car owners in hot water, said Jeffrey Boone, approved auto repair specialist, Towson office of AAA Mid-Atlantic, headquartered in Wilmington, Del.“That can be very dangerous,” Boone said. “There are certain places in a car engine that will let water in but it won’t let it out.”It’s also not a good practice to attempt a do-it-yourself engine cleaning. Most engines don’t need to be cleaned, Boone said. As most people know, modern cars are controlled mainly by computers within their engines. The computers can be damaged by water.“If somebody doesn’t know what they are doing [when cleaning an engine”>, that can be very dangerous,” Boone’s colleague Ed Kriston said. However, there are some situations in which cleaning an auto engine is a good idea. One is when an engine has a leak that allowed oil and dust to cake on. Cleaning the engine will allow it to run cooler, Kriston said. But again, it’s foolhardy for laypeople to attempt to clean the engine themselves. Certified technicians who properly clean engines use special cleaners and generally rinse the car’s engine with a gentle spray. Another reason to use a qualified technician for such cleaning is to protect the environment. Not only will the wash consist of mainly recycled water, which has been filtered, but it also will keep oil in a separate canister for proper disposal News source: Examiner

Not For the DIY

As much as we urge everybody to dive in head first and tackle your own repairs and regular maintenance, there are times when you shouldn’t even consider it. This letter is a perfect reminder that sometimes you should absolutely leave it to a professional: We have a 2007 Honda Odyssey, 6 mos old. My wife took a right corner in the garage too tight, dented the rt side door and rear quarter panel. Bad scrape and dents. 2 estimates, one from [shop name deleted”>, both around $1700. I looked online and found I could buy the replacement outer shell/skin for door and quarter panel for about $1000. [Shop”> said there is much more labor in replacing the panels, but that seems strange since they don’t have to pound out the dents or paint. If I do the repair they want to do, it will still be repainted and I think it will be conspicuous. But why would simply replacing the panels be so much more work ? don’t they have to remove the panels to bang out the dents anyway ? thanks much. — Steve Steve’s lack of experience in body repair could get him into real trouble here. Luckily, he’s chosen to use a body shop to repair his Odyssey. Replacing a door skin is very labor intensive, so much that many shops won’t do it. In short, the dented panel has to be painstakingly removed by uncrimping the entire edge of the door, sometimes it’s even spot welded. Then the new panel must be carefully crimped along its entire edge. An amateur could really screw this up. Steve’s second shop choice is going to use body filler to fill the damaged areas, then repaint. They don’t have to remove any panels to do this. If done right, this can result in an excellent repair. Gibbs to Toyota

FONTANA, Calif. — Hey, in case you haven’t heard, Joe Gibbs Racing is switching to Toyota for the 2008 Cup season. Yes, the news conference announcing that is still scheduled for next week, but Kyle Busch rendered that exercise largely moot Friday at California Speedway.“We were just always kept in the loop on what exactly was going to happen with that and, when they finally made their decision, they went ahead and called us,” said Busch, who will drive for the No. 18 Gibbs team in 2008.Asked what that call was, Busch replied, “That they were going with Toyota.”Busch said he’s “pretty much OK with” the move.”It’s something more so that crew chiefs, the engineers and all those guys need to approve on,” Busch said. “Us drivers, it doesn’t matter what we’re driving.”Busch said he talked to Mark Cronquist, the head engine builder at Gibbs, about Toyota engines as Busch was considering where he would be going after leaving Hendrick Motorsports this year.“They brought Mark in because I had a bunch of questions about the motor stuff,” Busch said. “You know (Toyota’s) got a lot of questions in that area with the motors because they’ve got, supposedly, the top-end power, but they don’t have the bottom end and stuff like that.“Mark alluded to me that they feel like their package that they have in the Chevrolet engines, especially with the new R-7 stuff, that they can translate that into the Toyota stuff and, hopefully, have a pretty good piece come January.”Crew Chief note: Wonder what they offered Tony Stewart to walk away from GM. Mileage Tips

Pulling into the gas station, you feel a little pang in your stomach – this fill-up is gonna cost about $40.With gas prices staying above $2.50 per gallon, a lot of drivers are looking for ways to squeeze every last cent out of each gallon of gas they buy. These tips from Miami Valley mechanics and fueleconomy.org will help:1. Check your tire pressure. “Tire inflation is critical,” said David Schnieder, owner of Dare Automotive Specialists in Dayton. “Inflate the tires to 10 percent below the maximum air pressure given on the side of the tire.” For example, if the maximum pressure on the side of the tire says 44, the air pressure should be 40.2. Check filters and systems. “A fuel system cleaning will clear up the fuel passages and gets carbon buildup out. This lets fuel burn cleaner and easier,” said Alan Tackett, part-owner of Preferred Car Care in Springfield.3. Think aerodynamically. “When you have the air on, keep the windows up because of the aerodynamics of the car,” Schnieder said. The car was designed to have the air travel around it and having the windows down creates a pull and slows down your car.4. Condense your trips. Try combining as many trips as you can, according to fueleconomy.gov. Visit the grocery, mall and gym in one trip. You’ll save gas and time.5. Keep your car tuned-up. Keeping your vehicle in top condition – changing the spark plugs, air filters and other parts when recommended – will make your car run better, Brooks said. “When everything is working right, that is when your car is at its top performance, and that is when it gets better gas mileage.”6. Buy a new car. If you are in the market for a new car, go for a fuel-efficient model. If you’re in the market for a new car, look for one that gets good gas mileage in a brand that you like, Neely said.Hybrid cars will save you gas, but may not save you much money, Neely said. “They are nice and get better gas mileage, but they are expensive.” If you drive a lot, you’ll most likely benefit from the hybrid, but if your driving habits are typical, then the extra cost of the car won’t payoff in the long run, he said.7. Use good gas. “Stay away from fuel containing any alcohol. It takes twice as much alcohol as gas to run a car,” Schnieder said.”Run the right gas. If you need octane 89, use octane 89. Just go by what the manufacturer says,” Brooks said.”Another thing that will help is using quality Fuel,” said Greg Reffitt, owner of Reffitt’s Auto Repair in Hamilton. “You may pay a bit more for it, but you will save money by getting better gas mileage.”8. Don’t speed. According to fueleconomy.gov, following the speed limit will increase your gas mileage. Each vehicle reaches its best fuel economy at different speeds, but the average is 55-60 mph. Going over that will decrease your gas mileage. For example, every five miles over 60 mph you go adds about 20 cents to the price of a gallon of gas. Also, be a more careful, less aggressive driver. Speeding, braking quickly and rapid acceleration will waste gas. You can lose up to 33 percent of the gas mileage at highway speeds and about 5 percent of the mileage in town.9. Lighten the load. Any extra weight will reduce your gas mileage, according to fueleconomy.gov. For every 100 pounds of extra weight in your vehicle, your gas mileage is reduced by about 2 percent. This affects smaller cars more than larger vehicles, but any extra weight can change the mileage.10. Watch the idling. Whether or not it wastes gas to idle your car depends on if it is fuel injected or carbureted, Coldwell said. The newer cars are fuel injected so shutting off the car and starting the car doesn’t waste much gas because it’s pulled directly from the tank. When the car is in idle you are using gas but getting zero miles to the gallon – therefore wasting gas. Drivers with fuel-injected cars should shut their car off instead of idling. However, carbureted cars are different. If you are just going to be sitting for a short time, then it’s OK to leave the car on, because more gas would be wasted by turning it on and off, Coldwell said. News source: Dayton Daily News

NASCAR OOPS & Dale Jr

OK NASCAR what are you going to do to resolve the fiasco with Busch I have not seen the replay as you did not but after seeing you made a mistake why not let him resume his position? I don’t recall a mistake in NASCAR before but I hope something is done although you have always said when the race is over its over period. Makes it look like Newman did the right thing by staying out to bad he wasn’t right. What does Dale Jr have over his fans he has not won a race since I don’t know when and never has a Championship(looks like he wont make the Chase) and I don’t think he comes across well in interviews but His fan base is still incredible. I do give him a lot of credit for telling people to lay off Theresa. She was just doing the smart business thing with the #8 I think she could have been nasty and said he wasn’t worth the money he wanted with his record I’m not surprised Bud dropped him I would think Kasey is a lock for Bud after his showing this weekend and talk about an excellent interview I havent seen his after race interview I hope he has lost his shake he had previously but he is young yet.

Better Mileage From GM

DETROIT – General Motors Corp. says it is testing a new combustion process that could increase fuel economy in conventional engines by up to 15 percent. The announcement comes as fuel economy has become a increasingly important issue as Fuel prices have risen. Foreign automakers have captured a bigger share of the U.S. market in part by emphasizing fuel efficiency. The process GM is testing, called homogeneous charge compression ignition, approaches the fuel efficiency of a diesel engine without the need for advanced pollution controls, the company said in a statement. It is being tested in two drivable concept vehicles, a Saturn Aura and an Opel Vectra, and was to be shown to reporters Friday at GM’s proving ground in Milford. The process ignites an air-fuel mixture in the cylinders by compressing it, producing a low-temperature, flameless energy release in the combustion chamber, the company said. Since all the fuel in the combustion chamber is burned at the same time, the engine uses less fuel to produce power that is similar to conventional engines. The company gave no estimate of when the technology might come to market, but said it still needs to work on controlling the combustion process.”Additional development costs, including research and testing programs, are required to make the technology ready for the great variety of driving conditions that customers experience,” Uwe Grebe, executive director for GM’s powertrain advanced engineering, said in a statement.
