Love or hate your auto repair center? What level of customer service you are looking for at an auto repair center? . The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence reports that women are not only becoming more influential in deciding what car to buy, they are also taking over the traditionally male-dominated responsibility of maintenance and repair. With this increased buying power of women comes an increasing need for automotive service employees to understand women’s likes and dislikes, as well as their buying habits.Big and influential ASE reports that more than 65 percent of customers who take their vehicle to a repair shop for service and repair are women. This increasing presence and buying power of women in the automotive industry is the result of a rise in the overall percentage of female drivers. Research that shows nearly half of new car purchases are made by women, and 53 percent of used-car sales can be attributed to women. Ford Motor Marketing reports women have 95 percent veto power regarding automotive purchases.Customer service/politeness countWomen believe repair shop operators and technicians treat them differently because they are women, and the difference is seldom positive Women want to be informed customers, understand the repair in layman’s terms and receive quality repairs and customer service … not really any different from the expectations that men have for automotive repairs. Clean waiting rooms, timely delivery, and repair orders that are easy to understand. Service with a smile and a “can do” attitude make women customers feel welcome. Women like to know that someone is available to answer their questions with “yes,” “no” or “I’ll find out” women customers like an efficient, expedient process at the front counter (unless they have questions about the repair; if this is the case, be ready to provide a lot of details). After the repair, make sure women are part of any customer follow-up program. Overall, women answer surveys because they see it as a way to provide feedback to companies.Ultimately, all customers want value. Value is difficult to assess, however, fair prices, respectful service, convenience, quality repairs and a pleasant atmosphere are good starters for creating value in any customer’s mind.
Seafoam Working
beautiful Sunday is a good day for getting some car work done. The Wife mentioned that her Check Engine light was on, and the last couple of times that happened it was for the same reason: a dirty sensor that took five minutes to clean. She also needed an oil change, so I figured I’d get some Sea Foam and clean the engine and the intake.Sea Foam, for those of you who don’t know, is one of those products that a huge number of people who hang out in auto-repair forums swear by. You can add it to your gas tank to clean out your injectors, to your crankcase (i.e., your oil) to de-sludge your engine before an oil change, and even to your engine’s air intake to clean the valves.First of all, there is no auto parts store in Short Pump. Well, nothing good. The Carquest on Broad is great for getting a part or two, but it can’t complete with the selection at an AutoZone or Advance Auto.So I poured my existing Sea Foam into my crankcase, I looked up the “A” stores, and drove there, grumbling about wanting to open a franchise closer to me. Picked up what I needed and headed home. That would give my engine a nice cleaning; next I would change both our oil. That was a quick and easy job.Next, the fun part: putting the Sea Foam into the air intake. I read the instructions from several different people online, and they all agreed where to pour the stuff. I warned the Wife: “In a few minutes there’s going to be an, er, event outside.””What kind of ‘event’?””The kind that will make you raise your eyebrows and say ‘What the heck is he doing now?’,” I said. (Note: These are actual quotes.)So I started the engine, disconnected the proper hose, carefully poured the Sea Foam in, and let it do its stuff for a few moments. Then I shut the engine to let it soak, and repeated it with the Wife’s car.I called her out. “Come see.””Come see what?””Come see all the junk that’s in your engine.”While she stood on the porch I started her engine. Clouds of white smoke billowed out of the tailpipe as the Sea Foam – and a whole lotta engine crap – burned off and out.She went inside to avoid the cloud, which was spreading quickly. I shut her engine, then put all my tools and such away.”Tomorrow you get to drive to work James Bond style,” I said. “There’s more junk that needs burning off.”Wonderful.” News source: A Year In Richmond
End Of The Gas Cap On Ford
DETROIT – For those drivers who pull away from the pump with their gas tank cap on the trunk lid, Ford Motor Co. has begun to make good on a 2006 promise to get rid of the caps on its entire model lineup.Jettisoning the pesky caps will become most apparent in the new 2009 F-150 pickup truck, Ford’s top-selling vehicle, which was unveiled this week at the North American International Auto Show. It will hit showrooms in the fall. The capless refueling system already is available on the 2008 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, and it’s coming to the 2009 Flex crossover and Lincoln MKS luxury sedan, said Matt O’Leary, chief engineer on the pickup. The feature may not cause people to buy the trucks, but O’Leary said it’s something that they’ll appreciate every time they fill up.”People just don’t like the cap,” he said. “Anyone who drives a vehicle hates that.”The system, which came from Ford’s NASCAR racing experience, first appeared on the 2003 Ford GT sports car. It has two small spring-loaded tabs that pull back a flap inside the fuel filler neck as the nozzle hits them. When the nozzle is pulled out, the flap closes. In addition to the convenience factor, the capless system also has environmental benefits, O’Leary said, by limiting the escape of Fuel vapors. And it ends a common problem that occurs when a cap isn’t screwed on tightly enough – a check engine light that appears on the dashboard due to a break in the fuel system’s vacuum.Ford says eventually all of its vehicles will be capless. It originally made the promise to eliminate the caps at an automotive conference in August 2006.Aaron Bragman, an auto analyst with the consulting firm Global Insight in Troy, Mich., called the new system a nice “surprise and delight” feature, but said no one would buy a Ford because of it.”It’s a nice addition, but by no means a decision-maker,” he said.O’Leary said he expects other automakers to develop their own versions of the system and that it eventually would spread to all vehicles.Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president for vehicle sales, service and marketing, said he isn’t so sure.”The removal of the gas cap never shows up like a problem in any of our research,” he said. 550Hp Cadillac
DETROIT – The new version of the Cadillac CTS-V is designed to go after the world’s fastest and most elite sport sedans. With a 550-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine and magnetic-controlled shock absorbers, the new 2009 CTS-V ought to be able to keep up.”The CTS-V represents the full extension of our design, technology and performance capabilities,” said Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor. In addition to the performance upgrades, the CTS-V, to be unveiled Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, also will have Recaro performance driving seats.General Motors Corp. (nyse: GM – news – people ) says the new car will compete with such elite vehicles as the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG and E63 AMG.Taylor said the car enthusiast is a critical market for Cadillac as it tries to attract new buyers to the CTS, which was redesigned for 2008.”The audience for this car is a dream buyer,” said Clay Dean, Cadillac’s design director.Pricing and fuel economy were not announced for the car, which should make its way to dealerships sometime this fall. The 2007 CTS-V, the last year such a model was made, cost $52,170, and Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said the new version would be a little more than that. The new version will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, Caldwell said.Crew Chief note: Maybe the V8 is not dead could I have been wrong?? Tips For Buying Parts ONline
Buying your car parts online is not a bad idea. Buying them from a fraudulent site is. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of auto parts dealers parading their wares on the Web. Deciding on the most reliable source for your car parts is a crucial thing. Here are a few tips on how to buy discount auto parts online:Conduct a background checkAlways look for signs of professionalism and expertise before subscribing to online car part dealer’s services. It never hurts to spend a few minutes googling for background information on the dealer. If there is a phone number indicated in the site, call it. Also, feel free to inquire about the sites at the Better Business Bureau. Every region (supposedly) has one.Knowledge is PowerWhen buying car parts, it is important that you are familiar with the device. Not knowing anything about the part would probably make the search, not only longer, but futile as well. Also, the internet is flooded with small time auto parts dealer that don’t know the difference between a radiator cap and a distributor cap.Another sure sign of an online import auto parts dealer’s reliability is how much information they include about the product. Also, always look for warranty information. Remember, knowledge about the product reflect the integrity of the site.Credit is good, reallyOnline dealers that accept checks and cash are rare. However, your credit card should do the trick. One advantage of purchasing thru credit card is that there is such a thing as fraud protection. Some credit card companies even improve on the fraud incident coverage mandated by law. Paypal is another good payment option, as this method also offers fraud protection. Conversely, online buyers should be warned that it is not advisable to use a debit card, especially for the first transaction. News source: Auto Mechanics

Don’t Bother Changing Your Own Oil
I need to preface this by saying I was an assistant manager for an auto repair shop for over 3 years. So I really do know what I’m talking about, I promise. Many lists I have seen on how to save money include changing the oil on your car yourself as a way to save money. That’s bollocks. Let me tell you why. Most auto repair shops that also do other work like brakes, tuneups, and tires use oil changes as a loss leader to get you to come to their shop for more major repairs and maintenance. The regular price for an oil change at the shop I used to work at is currently $18.90. You can often find coupons for $14.90, and occasionally they have coupons for $12.90. They are set up to do oil changes very quickly, with an oil pit down below or at least on a lift. The guys that worked the oil change bay frequently could complete an oil change in about 5 minutes most of the time. Now, even if you have several cars in front of you, that’s still pretty fast timing. If you can hit the shop when there’s nobody in front of you, you can be in and out in about 15 minutes, most of the time.Compare that to changing the oil yourself. You have to buy ramps to drive your car up on, an oil wrench, plus you have to buy the oil at about $2.50 per bottle (I’m not 100% certain on this. I haven’t bought oil by the bottle in over 7 years, but my husband who drives a car that has a slight oil leak says this is what oil costs) and an oil filter for between $6 and $10. Consider that the average car requires about 5 quarts of oil and just the oil and filter is going to run more than the coupon price.Plus, it takes time to change the oil yourself on your car. And, if you mess up and strip the threads on the oil pan bolt, it’s you that has to deal with fixing that. If the repair shop does so, they have to fix it, not you. And then you have to take the used oil for recycling- seriously, it’s more time than it’s worth. You’re not going to save money if you don’t go to the right sort of shop. The shops that do oil changes only are typically more expensive, charging between $25 and $30 for an oil change. And I have no idea what dealers charge for their oil changes, but I expect their prices are in line with the rest of their prices. That is to say, expensive. The type of shop you want to choose is the sort that does all kinds of work. Watch out for coupons that come in the mail and take your car in to try the place out.A bonus of taking your car to one of these shops for regular oil changes is you get to know the shop before you have to bring your car in for more major work. There are many unscrupulous shops out there. It drives the honest shops and auto technicians wild because people tend to assume that all shops are shady, based on the actions of a few shops. But you can get a good feel for what a shop is like based on how they handle oil changes. If they explain things carefully and tell you how seriously you need an item (I always instructed my technicians to make sure to differentiate between an item needing replaced by mileage/time vs. actual need), then you can assume they’re probably an honest shop. But if they act like everything is needing to be replaced on your car, unless everything really does need to be replaced on your car, they’re probably unscrupulous. Keep shopping around until you find a good shop, and then recommend them to your friends and family as well. Good shops get a lot of business by word of mouth. Some maintenance items that are totally worth doing yourself is the air filter, PCV valve, and, with some technical knowledge, tuneups, plug wires, and distributor caps. Air filters, especially, are ridiculously easy to replace and are overpriced in every shop I have ever been in. If we ever get a warm, non-rainy day and I remember to, I may do a tutorial on how simple it is to replace your air filter.Happy motoring! News source: Home-EC101
Used Auto Parts May Be Closer Than You Think
You an save a lot of money buying used parts for your repair. Of course, it’s important to know which parts are ok to buy used, but there are plenty of them. Unfortunately, thinking about saving the money is as far as many people get. The thought of standing at a greasy counter while the assorted varieties of parts pullers check you out might not be your idea of a great way to start you auto repair weekend. So instead you break down and pay the extra cash for a brand new tail light or power window motor. Times are a-changin.’ These days you can order a used turn signal from the comfort of your living room. Thanks to services like the Automix Parts Locater you can effectively search hundreds of salvage yards at once. Order your part from one of the search results (after you see who will give you the best price of course!) and it will appear at your door. This method of buying parts won’t always fit your situation. For sudden and serious repairs most people won’t want to wait at the mailbox for their part, but when time is on your side you can take advantage and save both time and money. Battery Replacement
Frankly, auto maintenance has always scared me. All I’ve ever “fixed” are wiper blades, headlights and taillights. The extent of my under-the-hood knowledge is how to check and top off oil, antifreeze and windshield washer fluid. I’ve never changed my own oil because I didn’t want to deal with the waste material. That’s why I recently found myself using an Entertainment Book coupon to get a lube, oil and filter service for $15.88. When I paid, the counter guy said my battery was on its way out. A replacement would retail for about $119.99, but he could get me one for $89.99.I know less about cars than about doing my own taxes. Still, that seemed a little high. Maybe I could do better on my own — but that would mean installing it myself. Batteries not instructedFolks who do all their own auto maintenance are probably snickering. What’s the big deal? It’s not like replacing the transmission. But some of us didn’t grow up watching dads fix cars. My father could build, plumb and wire a house, but he never did auto work. All I knew about batteries is that they have the potential to explode, and that battery acid can ruin your day.An MSN article noted that they don’t make ’em like they used to; in newer cars, batteries might need replacing after four years. My 2001 Chevy Cavalier still had the original battery, so I guess there was a reason it was faltering. The Sunday ads revealed a $54.99 model at Schuck’s Auto Supply, just two blocks away. Before leaving, I did an Internet search on battery replacement. It didn’t seem that hard. A little grimy, maybe. That $54.99 battery wasn’t the right kind, but a suitable model cost just $10 more. (Incidentally, both costs included disposal of the old battery.) The friendly folks at Schuck’s offered to lend the tool I’d need. Before this, I’d never used a socket wrench. (It was cool. I want one!)Getting the battery out of the vehicle was tricky. It was heavier than I’d imagined, and got hung up somehow. As I struggled and cussed, a young man stopped to help. He lifted it out in one smooth motion. Show-off.Success, and savingsI lugged the equally heavy replacement out on my own, nestled it into place, and reconnected the battery and terminal clamps. Reluctantly I said goodbye to my new friend the socket wrench, and prepared for the acid test, so to speak: Would the car start? The car fired right up. And boy, were my hands dirty. Back home, I found that liquid dish detergent really can substitute for that Orange Goop hand cleaner. (Thanks to the Smart Spending message board reader who posted that tip.)If an auto know-nothing like me can do this, I bet you can, too. So when your battery starts to fail, consider replacing it yourself. First, of course, you’ll want to read the instructions on the site I mentioned above, or in a car care book, to make sure you’re doing it safely. I think it’s well worth it. About 30 minutes of work saved me $25. It might take you even less time. Plus, you’ll get to use a socket wrench. News source: Money Central
V-8 Gone
General Motors Corp. has abandoned plans to build a V-8 engine for luxury vehicles at a plant near Buffalo, blaming new federal mileage requirements and high Fuel prices cutting into consumer demand. The decision announced Thursday will affect 130 to 150 laid-off workers who would have been brought back to work on the dual overhead cam engine, GM Powertrain spokeswoman Sharon Basel said.Plans to retool the plant to build a new V-8 Duramax clean diesel engine for GM’s light duty pickup trucks are still on track, Basel said.Employees were told about the decision Thursday morning.”There are a couple of factors that have come into play over the course of the past year,” Basel said, citing the popularity of more fuel-efficient and high-feature V-6 engines with performance similar to the larger motors.”We’re seeing the demand for V-8 engines rapidly declining,” Basel said, “and then you combine that with the forces like rising fuel prices and the new CAFE legislation and that has caused us to go back and reevaluate our product portfolio.”Congress last month approved the first increase in automobile fuel economy in 32 years, boosting mileage by 40 percent to 35 miles per gallon. The automakers fought an increase in the federal fuel standard, known as CAFE, maintaining it would limit the range of vehicles consumers will have available in showrooms and threaten auto industry jobs.GM announced plans in January 2007 to begin producing the now-shelved V-8 engine in Tonawanda in 2009. Six months later, the plant, which employs 1,850 hourly and salaried workers, landed the Duramax clean diesel engine after an aggressive lobbying campaign by elected and union officials. Both announcements came after the Erie County Industrial Development Agency – hoping to improve Tonawanda’s chances of winning future engine lines – approved nearly $8 million in tax breaks for the plant in December 2006.”We were very concerned a year ago when we got the first engine, we needed to get some more work inside the plant,” Kevin Donovan, assistant Region 9 director of the United Auto Workers, told WIVB television on Thursday. “We went and talked to General Motors (nyse: GM – news – people ) and put some good competitive packages together that safeguarded the rest of the jobs that were inside the plant, along with all the other engines that were there.”In awarding the Duramax diesel engine, the automaker said it will invest $100 million in the 3.1 million-square-foot plant to produce the 4.5-liter, high-output diesel engine for the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra pickup and Hummer H2. Production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2009.The Tonawanda plant ranked as the eighth most productive engine plant in North America in a May 2007 report by Troy, Mich.-based Harbour Consulting.Daniel Gundersen, upstate chairman of the Empire State Development Corp., held out hope Thursday the plant will attract a new product line to replace the lost V-8.”The GM plant here in Tonawanda remains one of the most efficient and productive plants in the U.S. with a skilled work force and modern equipment,” he said.
